“The Field”

This painting represents a milestone in growth. The artist, seizing an opportunity to learn from a well-established professional, Morgan Wrestling, took advantage of a class he was offering at the California art institute in Calabasas. “Painting the Head in Oil” – the first thing he had them do was write down a very detailed list of what they were about to learn. To this day, he has kept it – even though it’s covered with paint, and was almost lost several times over the years. The artist regards it as the gold-standard approach to old masters painting and is sharing it with you here. One of the morsels of great knowledge was “There are four kinds of edges; Hard, Firm, Soft, and Lost.” In this lesson painting, “The Field” had to represent all four of those ‘edges.’ The original was sold at the Palm Loft Gallery in Carpinteria, California in 2014.
