Oil Pastel on black crescent board. Circa 1090 – The artist was inspired by how oil pastel pops out of black – this was a study of that effect. Coming across a black & white glossy of an actual premiere event was the motivator here. The artist worked in reverse order of what’s considered a normal approach to creating fine art – which is to work darks out of the light colored surface. Instead, he starts with a black surface and brings the lights, or color out from black. This is very unconventional, forcing him to abandon his normal process which, as he puts it, was a breath of fresh air.
